Perfect for swimming & fishing - 30 minutes north.
Tinopai is the closest town in the Kaipara to the harbour mouth and there are great views across the peninsula out to the Kaiapara heads. The wharf occupies a great position, looking out across the harbour and to the heads and originally built to ship apples but the business failed during the great depression.
Be wary of the tides! When the tide turns the water rushes out at a dangerous rate but when the tide is right the wharf is great for summer swimming and always good for fishing - you can catch kahawai, snapper and if you’re really lucky a kingfish. Golden sand & sheltered swimming on the beach.
Tinopai is just a small settlement of about 400 but expands to 1000 during the summer holiday season with people enjoying the beach, the fishing and getting away from everything with lots of classic kiwi baches designed for unpretentious old-fashioned holidays.
